Democracy stuff.
Jun. 28th, 2006 09:48 amSo on Monday I went to that Meet the candidates forum for Ward 5 Democrats. It was mostly populated by Ward 5 organizers. The Michigan Senate candidate who was there, Rebekah Warren, was very nice and sharp and held good positions on everything I care about and wants to move the party back toward the left like I do. She's just started a campaign blog, and if you'd like to help out her campaign, folks are meeting at 6 tonight at 234 8th Street to do that. The victory party (I hoep!) on August 8th is at Arbor Brewing Co.
I also met Conan Smith, who is running for re-election as a Washtenaw County Commissioner. I really liked Conan as well. Extremely well spoken and seems well versed in the complex situation (mix of local and county politics) that is county government.
There was a representative of Sonia Schmerl's campaign for City representative there as well. That person thought the campaign had a web page but I'm unable to find it. Or it may be that it's just not live yet. She's running against Chris Easthope. Now, my mom and some others have been frustrated with Chris and many people in general are frustrated with the city's stance on development. I've been pretty happy with Chris, myself, and I feel the Greenway proposal might not be the best design in the world. (see an article about it in the Michigan Daily.) Whether we go with the Downtown Development Authority's plan or the greenway, it looks like we're going to lose my favorite parking lot downtown, at 1st and William, which is currently free after 6 pm.
Anyway, the democratic Primary election is August 8th. if you're a demotract, do plan to vote in it. If you live in Precinct 6, you might even write me in for precinct delegate.
