Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction," was released in 1965. In its first stanza, the song not only speaks of the horrors of war, but criticizes the drafting of young men into the military who, at the time, were not even eligible to vote. My friend Emily taught me this song while sitting in a hammock in my parents' back yard.

“The eastern world it is exploding.
violence flaring,
bullets loading..
you’re old enough to kill
but not for voting.
You don’t believe in War-
but what’s that gun you’re toting?
And even the Jorden river has bodies floating.

But you tell me over & over & over again, my friend,
ah, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction.”
