I was going to skip this meme, and then I saw gerisullivan's post about it (on my screen, in the background, with pnh's meme in the background on *her* screen) and thought, "I could do that! If we keep it going we could be as famous as those cats..." (naw, not really. But we can dream!)

Here are the pictures from the SMOS dinner on the 12th. I didn't take many and half of them were blurry because the camera was set on "portrait" mode. But you can get the idea. I like it when the kitchen is full of people. Anywhere I live has to have a big friendly kitchen. My next one will hopefully have more seating, as well.

Citizen's Emergency Response Team (CERT) offering training, looking for volunteers

Washtenaw Citizen's Emergency Response Team(CERT) training this coming October. We are looking for volunteers interested in joining our CERT team : )

CERT is a group of volunteer emergency workers who have received basic
training in disaster preparedness, disaster fire suppression, basic disaster
medical operations, light search and rescue, and team operations. The team
is trained to act as an auxiliary to existing emergency responders in the
event of a major disaster (tornados, flooding, traffic control, helping out
at U of M games or whatever our team is called out to do).

The concept of widespread local volunteer emergency responders was
implemented and developed by the Los Angeles Fire Department in 1985. The
Whittier Narrows (California) earthquake of 1987 and the San Francisco
earthquake in 1989 demonstrated the need for preparing citizens to take care
of themselves and their loved ones after a disaster. After the events of
9-11 it became clear that CERT volunteers were needed in every community so
that we all could be prepared should there be an emergency.

The Washtenaw County CERT team was formed last June. In July our team
participated in a regional Emergency Preparedness Exercise and I am proud to
say that our fledgling team came in at 2nd place (by one point I must
say)...so we are a young team and could really use more trained volunteers.

The CERT training runs for 7 weeks. Training classes are held every Tuesday
starting on October 7th, 2008 from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The training classes
are held in the conference room that is in the second floor of the fire
station which is across the street from City Hall.

I have a copy of the brochure and application, so let me know if you want me to forward them to you. I'm quite interested in this, but since it's up in the air whether I'll be staying in the county for the duration, I don't know if I'll do it or not.
