Last week I received an ARC of The New Weird in the mail from Tachyon Publications. This is an anthology edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer.

The book is interestingly divided into four sections. The first section, 'Stimulus,' puts forth stories by Clive Barker, M. John Harrison, Michael Moorcock, Kathe Koja, Simon D. Ings, and Thomas Ligotti, all of which I gather are considered to have been influential in defining the 'New Weird,' which we supposedly see actual cases of in the second section. That section, titled 'Evidence,' has stories by China MiƩville, Jeffrey Thomas, Jay Lake, K. J. Bishop, Jeffrey Ford, Brian Evenson, Leena Krohn, Steph Swainston, and Alistair Rennie.

There follows a section of 'Discussion,' and then Hal Duncan, Paul Di Filippo, Cat Rambo, Sarah Monette, Conrad Williams, Felix Gilman and Daniel Abraham all take turns contributing to an experimental "Round-robin" story that constitutes the final 'Laboratory' section of the book.

It looks quite intriguing and the almost steampunk clockwork jewel beetle on the cover really seems to capture the essence nicely as well. Kudos to Mike Libby of Insect Lab, for that. (Sken, you absolutely *must* click through and go look at his collection of clockwork bugs.)
