Former Governor Ann Richards Loses Battle with Cancer.

During her term she appointed the first black University of Texas regent; the first crime victim to join the state Criminal Justice Board; the first disabled person to serve on the human services board; and the first teacher to lead the State Board of Education.

Under Richards, the Texas Rangers pinned stars on their first black and female officers.

Ann Richards was a fine Governor; a woman both warm-hearted and smart. Among other things she spoke at my college graduation. She was unfazed when some of the bleachers started to collapse in the middle of her speech and immediately started to give people helpful instructions, then paused her talk until everything settled. I was impressed with her in many ways. This world needs more like her.

To help that happen, follow her wishes and Support the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders through the Austin Community Foundation.

The Indigo Girls are at the Michigan Theater on Oct 20. Tickets go on sale on September 15th.

I'll be in San Francisco. I guess I really can't complain. But, damn. (I've seen them in concert - they really rock!)
