Chinese new year and signs of the zodiak

So I'm curious, do you other folks out there celebrate Chinese New Year?

And do you know your chinese zodiak sign? Is it one you relate to?

Brian and I were born the same year, the year of the tiger. 36 years later, Rosie was also born in the year of the tiger. We think that's pretty neat. :)

I don't celebrate the chinese new year, but of course I've eaten at Chinese restaurants so I know my sign ;)

I was born in 1981, the year of the rooster. I do feel a connection with the description of the rooster, more so than my western zodiac sign (Sagittarius), actually.

Scott was born at the very end of the year of the snake (the beginning of 1978). Thank goodness the snake is listed as one of the "best matches" for a rooster in many places.

Now I want to have a baby in 2017, the next year of the rooster. *puts it on the calendar*

oh, that's excellent that you are well-matched signs. :)

Two tigers are supposed to do well together, too.

We have started celebrating Chinese New Year since we got Chinese people in the family. I have a stash of red envelopes in my desk for the kids' lucky money. I don't really see myself strongly as a Horse, but I don't see myself strongly as a Leo, either; I think I'm just not mostly a Zodiac person.

Ha! I was going to reply to someone else's comment to say that I've always read my best friends are supposed to be of signs Horse and Dog, but I have known almost none of either. And then you and Geri Sullivan both post that you were born under the Horse sign! Two of my favorite people. Well, that's a nice synchronicity anyway.

Nope

The Asian segment is of the catholic persuasion. Other than it means trips to the homeland are outta sight, it's not a big deal.

I don't celebrate Chinese New Year. I've been in Chinese restaurants offering New Year specials from time to time, but think I only went deliberately once. I was born in the year of the Horse, but don't relate to it particularly more than the descriptions on Chinese menus for several other signs. In particular, when I drill down to being a Wood Horse, little of that description fits. I'm much more of an Earth Horse or Water Horse, and aspects of the Metal Horse fit me better than the Wood Horse description. On one dubious website, anyway. On another, there's must about the basic Horse description that fits to a T, but no info about the elements.

A Year of the Tiger family; neat!

I didn't know about the elements when I was younger, but most of the basic Tiger description matches me pretty well. Except that we are supposed to have a temper, and most of the time I don't.

However, I am also a Wood Tiger, and according to an (also dubious) site I read, that's supposed to be a stabilizing element that helps us get along with other people.

That's neat that you are a Horse. Tigers are supposed to be good friends with Horses, but since the signs are not close in the cycle, most of the friends whose signs I've known are neither horse nor dog, the signs I'm supposed to be best friends with.

I am only vaguely aware of it and try to have Chinese Food when I do. When the kids were younger we would go for Chinese food and they would always check out their signs but without having the calendar I don't know what we are. I think it is neat that you are all the year of the tiger.

I'm an Earth Monkey: http://www.usbridalguide.com/special/chinesehoroscopes/Monkey.htm
I've known about it since I was a kid - my Grandma gave me an adorable little cloisonee monkey pendant when I was young. I identify with the monkey, but I've always been puzzled at the way they match up different signs for romantic compatibility.

I never celebrated the Chinese New Year, but I might go to the Japanese Mochitsuki events at UM this Saturday: http://www.ii.umich.edu/cjs/eventsprograms/specialevents/ci.cjss9thannualmochitsukisat12jan2013_ci.detail because I have a friend who'll be on the drum team that's performing. (Yes, I know, tangent from Chinese to Japanese. Just because it's timely.)

Not normally, no. But the year I was in Hong Kong for Chinese New Year, I didn't really have a choice (it was fun).

And do you know your chinese zodiak sign? Is it one you relate to?

Dragon (specifically, Water Dragon). Yes, I relate to it.

Whoa, three tigers in one house? That sounds explosive.

I'm year of the rabbit (wood rabbit, apparently) and I identify with that a bit more than my Western sign (Sagittarius). I'm not stylish, but the rest of it fits: quiet, needs a well-organized home, good communicator, avoids confrontation, outgoing but doesn't like the spotlight.

I don't generally celebrate Chinese new year as such, but my sister Reyna has a birthday that usually coincides with it, so we get caught in the traffic when we meet up for dim sum.

According to one of the sites someone linked to elsethread, Tigers are supposed to get along pretty well. Brian and I are also wood tigers, which is a stabilizing element. Rosie's a Metal Tiger, the most assertive and attention-demanding. Sounds about right!

The Sagittarian intellectualism fits with me, but other things about the western system have never synced with reality. For instance, I read somewhere that Sagittarians are not supposed to get along well with each other, yet at least half my good friends are also Sagittarians.

I'm a Monkey, elemental Fire. A former, almost completely compatible, housemate was also a Monkey, elemental Earth. We thought so much in synch it was kind of scary - except in the arena of romantic relationships. Made sense.

I used to celebrate Chinese New Year with my martial arts school, but I'm not currently practicing. As for my Chinese sign... it doesn't fit me all that well, depending on the description. It's hit or miss, as I would expect with any generalized astrology description. But then I don't believe in astrology.

Heyla

-blinks in surprise- I am a bit surprised but I am also Tiger, elemental Wood that I have also seen as colour Green, a cruel cruel joke on someone who really dislikes the colour. -g- I relate to some of the aspects but not to the root sign as much as others. I feel much closer to my Western sign (Pisces).

yeah, I really liked the combination of green and gold when I was a kid, and am starting to wear green frequently again, but I generally list blue as my favorite color.

I read somewhere also that tigers are supposed to like diamonds and rubies, and neither do a lot for me.

[identity profile] isik.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Heyla, O mousy one

I vastly prefer red so I could go for rubies but I actually prefer a rich garnet. I have never really favoured ostentation.

I'm a rooster. My son is a snake, daughter a monkey. Kids mom is a rabbit. I think roosters and rabbits aren't supposed to be compatible.

The family isn't compatible with the western zodiac signs either. I'm a Scorpio, son is a Sagittarius, daughter an Aries, kids mom a Gemini.

I'm a rat.

(Goes to sulk now.)

[identity profile] the-leewit.livejournal.com 2013-01-11 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Rats, the animal, are such exquisite and intelligent little beasties! So friendly and clean! You must be flattered.

I'm a pig... and I identify with that SO MUCH HARDER than I do with my western sign, Virgo.

I can't say i celebrate it so much, but i do try to take the opp to wish my Chinese friends a happy one.

As for my zodiac (Ox), i guess i relate. Plodding along with a yoke around my neck toward some distantly rewarding end does often seem a motif. :)

Miss ya!
