I'm seeing it inconsistently as the bar thing across the top of the page. I haven't figured out why yet - it's not showing up on my friends page, but I'm seeing on http://www.livejournal.com/ and when I look at some (but not all) of my friends pages using their styles.
Yeah - I see it across the top and sides of those pages, except the login box is the normal blue and white. If anything, it looks bad because its so weirdly inconsistent because of the frames.
I have "see other people's journals in my style" turned on, which I think is helping to keep it away when I comment on other people's journals, too. (I had it set that way before, but it seems to be helpful for this, too.)
I don't know why, but I'm not seeing it. But I see everything in my own style, because too many other folks' styles hurt my aged eyes. So maybe that's it? It took me hours to figure out what people were talking about.
I sent them a HELP question asking how to get rid of it. I consider it HIGHLY offensive. It's like putting a religious symbol on someone's page - one that they don't subscribe to. If they want to celebrate All Hallow's Eve, fine - but don't try to force it on me.
Just another example of the complete and total CLUELESSNESS of the people who own and program this web site. I guess going to Ivy League Schools CAN be hazardous to a person's social and mental development.
Yeah, you're using one of the styles that brings up a whole new page for a comment, where I think some of the new ones (like mine) just pop up the box right in the page you're already viewing.
I think it should at least be something you can opt-out of, for various reasons.
I feel the same way about any and all Christmas and Easter based themes and decorations, foisted on me all over the internet. People want to celebrate those holidays, go ahead, but I shouldn't have to look at it. So if they tell you how to fix it, let me know, and maybe I can avoid being attacked by wayward holly this year.
They said, It's only there for a few more days. Then essentially said, "We like to do it so YOU can just put up with it."
My response may get me tossed - I said:
So you've decided to force your religious beliefs on the rest of us? What a bunch of loser crapheads! Come on. Grow up! You should have left this crap in grade school!
BTW - there are others complaining about it. Maybe we should all go to Google Blogs? THEY don't have this crap on there.
Here's their exact response: <<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thank you for your feedback, and I'm sorry to hear that this design has caused you difficulty. This design is a limited-time design and will only be on the site until Friday. After Friday, it will return to its normal blue. Our design team enjoys doing special layouts for holidays and while we recognize that not every design will be embraced by every user of the site, at this time staff does not plan to allow users to opt out of these holiday designs. Thanks for letting us know how you feel about it, though. I've passed your feedback on to the design team so they may be aware of it.

yeah... doing it for the day of would have been fine. For the whole week is just lame.
It reminds me of the general trend of extending holidays for marketing purposes. I like my holidays for short periods. Halloween should be a day, Christmas 12 days, etc. stores doing longer themes for shoppers, okay, I wince, but okay. But any other place, the celebrations should be limited. And optional if possible.
Also, for me? Halloween is about being scary, not gory. So the dripping blood thing annoys the hell out of me.
Well, I would like grue-y horror themed things all year 'round. Most importantly, however, I don't bail when ell jay celebrates other holidays, with themed features or writer's block questions/prompts or whatever.
(I do, actually, celebrate Samhain, both secularly and religiously, but that's sort of besides the point).
And I can barely see it. I think I only end up seeing my "home" page when I first log in.
I didn't strike or leave over any of the other ell jay controversies, and I'm very, very unlikely to move my livejournal over what amounts to a banner, even if it's one my friends find annoying or ugly. I probably won't even do so if there's a similarly holiday-themed banner at Christmas time. Blasted mistletoe. I was far more annoyed with ell jay's treatment of fan fic writers and artists last year, and I'm still here.
Heh. I HATE the fact that stores are doing Xmas 3 months out, before Thanskgiving has come and gone. As if I really needed or appreciated the reminder of, "Oh, you're not Christian, so you don't really count."
IF you have Firefox - you're still stuck with the crappy red and black color scheme - and red on black makes it REALLY hard to read - but you dohn't have to put up with the rest of it.
In Firefox go to Tools options content (Load images automatically (hit the "exceptions" button) then in the small window above that wants the thing you want to block key in: http://p-stat.livejournal.com/horizon/halloween08/logo.png
And even the LJ name disappears. (You may have to re-open the page)
I'm a Christian and I don't celebrate Christmas either. Don't do Hester... I mean "easter" either. Both are non-Christian holidays, and very fine ones too, but I don't think it appropriate for me do take part in them.
The 4th of July, tho - we usually have a big family barbecue and shoot off fireworks. Loads of fun!
Odd. Maybe I'm hypersensitive on that count. Or perhaps mis-attributing the cause of the twitchiness. Then again, I do find it irritating that otherwise intelligent people go around claiming the USA's "Founding Fathers" were Christian and that the USA is "One Nation, Under God (and if you don't like it, get stuffed)." *shrug*
Only on a few pages, and it didn't affect my friend's page. So, no, I don't mind. It's temporarly and a break from the same-ol' same-ol'. To me it's like being surprised by a google holiday/special event design.
yeah, I mean, in most instances where you see or hear christmas mentioned, it's for commercial reasons, not reasons having to do with Christianity. And most of the symbols of christmas - the yule log, eggnog, rum toddy, rum pudding, santa claus, christmas trees - have nothing to do with Christianity at all. (viewing Saint Nick as a re-named Odin, anyway.)
My parents' friends, catholics, agnostics, athiests and all, get together for a Christmastime dinner each year and exchange small gifts and mostly appreciation of each other in a cheery atmosphere with good food, which is what Christmas is about for me. So no, it's not about non-christians not counting. Christians may have done a pretty good job of re-naming the yule, but they don't own the holiday, so far as I'm concerned.
They guys cavorting in the graveyard in the logo would be like the google thing - cute, amusing visual design. Blood dripping down from the top of the page isn't appealing visual design to me.

It may be because I have an old-fashioned theme that is not a complete skin.

I guess it depends what style and theme you're using. Or something.

How do you feel about the holiday designs that google puts up on their main search page?
no subject
I have a google search bar, but I never use it because it doesn't remember my previous searches.

Um, I don't really mind them. I was being facetious. I tried to indicate that with the *g* but I think I should have been more explicit.
