Pineapple Plant - Blooming Pineapples!

Pinapple Plant
Originally uploaded by netmouse.

Years ago, Bill had this idea that we would grow pineapple plants in our house, and harvest pineapples of our very own. Grow they did, but they didn't sprout pineapples until this year (My guess, having heard you can trigger them with ripening apples, is that they started blooming after we sprays all the plants with bitter apple spray to keep the cat off them).

It's fun watching them bloom fruit. :)

That is just beyond cool. :) It almost looks fake - like this little alien creature sprouting up out of the plant. So, you gonna have a party when it's ripe? :)

*hugs* t'was great running into you the other day, by the way. Must do that again sometime soon.

Odd. I always though the pineapple was not techincally a fruit, but instead the pith of the plant. I see your post, go off to Wikipedia, and learn that it is a berry!

Amazing...

Wow! Didn't know that was possible. Are these going to be the full-size kind, or is this some miniature ornamental variety?

I don't know how big they will get. We'll see!

If you planted a full-size one, you should eventually get full-size ones. You may need to get it a bigger pot, though.

Wow. I saw that, and it looked wrong. I didn't know why then I realized: I always thought pineapples grew on trees. Tall trees with broad leaves...

...then I realized those are coconuts. Oops.

Congrats on the pineapple, maybe you should try a coconut next?

Wow, that's really interesting! Maybe I should grow some pineapples myself. How did you get them? Did you plant seeds from pineapples you bought at the grocery, or did you buy some plants or seeds that were intended to grow them as houseplants, or what?

They simply planted the tops of whole pineapples after eating the fruit.

We cut off the tops of pineapples that we grew at the store, suspended them in water until they grew some roots, and then planted them.

The adult plants are very large, and the ends of the leaves are very pointy and sharp. I'm not sure I'd recommend them as a houseplant.

we have a pineapple plant, the fruit got to about the size of yours and the cats kicked it off romping around.

for the last two years, we've been nursing it through the growing phase.

Sweet!
Just make sure they aren't actually alien pod people who will take over the planet once they hatch. :-)

Anne,

I have grown them for a while, they are simple to grow, inside or out(they die in the winter here in Illinois). I have never had fruit. I will have to try the apple.
