Um, that's *my* water...

I like to keep a glass of water on the side table next to the bed. The cat seems to consider any freestanding water in glasses to be her drinking water, however, and I've failed to convince her the side table is a *table*, meaning one of those places where she's not allowed. Last night, thinking I was being clever, I tried keeping my water in a tall german glass that is too narrow for her head to fit into it.

In the middle of the night I woke to see her walk over and twice reach her paw into the glass and lift water up to her mouth to lick it off.

... I have to admire her cleverness, I guess.

I think next I try to find a place upstairs for her to have a second bowl of fresh water.

Or an old-style German beer stein (with lid), or a modern coffee mug (with lid).

well, Laura at work just gave me a cup with a lid and a slider-thing so you can seal the lid or slide it back just enough to drink.

That might help...

You could use a bottle, with or without a flip-open top.

I definitely recommend the lidded cup. No matter if you get her a bowl of her own, she'll still likely want yours. At least with puppies that's how it works. It doesn't matter if you have one for everyone, they want whichever one they don't have. :P

Exactly.

Bottled water. With the cap on.

Fill it with ammonia for a week or two. She isn't likely to touch it after that.

No scientific basis for this, just a wild ass guess. :)

My dog does the same thing. Why is it the "forbidden" water is always the most appealing to pets?

Water

My cat KitKit has done this trick for 15 years with any open liquids. The more sources, the happier he is. I suggest not leaving water around open.
