I guess they do have a type of wizards in them, but I would not have called them fantasy. They are Space Opera, rather similar to Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga, which also escaped my reading until just last year. (I had *heard* of both these and the vorkosigan saga, but had read neither.)
They have clever, witty people in them, who are brave and loving, both, in full measure, and face interesting challenges. It's good reading.
oh, and the authors have an appreciation of both cats and music that weaves its way throughout. Reminds me also somewhat of Spider Robinson's Callahan's books.
