Ow

This has been a physically challenging year for me. A few months ago I sprained my ankle. Then I had allergies so bad I lost my voice. Then I had a cold and lost it again (it's almost fully back, but not quite.) somehere in there I sprained my right wrist. Then I sprained my right ankle again, worse. A week later my stomach hurt and my appetite was low so we concluded I was at risk of peptic ulsers so I stopped taking ibuprofen.

(conclusion on my right ankle was microtears in the ligaments. Started physical therapy today.)

Then yesterday, my left knee gave way. It used to do that almot anually but it's been ten years since the last time. Ow.

So today I feel like such a gimp. Rt ankle in a brace. Rt wrist in a brace. Left knee wrapped.

Therapists says as long as I'm breastfeeding, my ligaments will stay loose and I'll be at risk for injury.

In the meantime, well, ow.

Thanks. Definitely needed.

I think that may be untrue about breastfeeding and loose ligaments. I'm pretty sure it's only actual pregnancy that has that effect. Your PT probably rarely seems women who breastfeed past six months, though, so may in her clinical experience not be able to separate the two effects. At any rate, sounds majorly ouchy. Please stop breaking yourself now!

This physical therapist seemed to to be speaking based on something he'd read, and now another friend of mine who has two kids has commented below that she had similar problems while nursing. I'm sure everything's not *as* loose as when pregnant, but mostly I'm hoping he's right in that I'm hoping to get less prone to this later...

Definitely intend to stop breaking myself. Also to devote more time to self-care in general. Especially fitness, and physical therapy of old injuries.

Interesting. I tried googling the subject, but google is not very helpful. It's certainly likely that your PT has access to medical information that I don't. However, I am pretty sure that the hormone responsible for loose joints in pregnancy, relaxin, is produced only during pregnancy. For myself, I didn't experience any joint problems during pregnancy or after, so my experience is not very enlightening.

Get well soon!

I hope your injuries can be fully repaired. Starting the treatment promptly will probably make a lot of difference.

In the UK you can buy ointments containing ibuprofen and, I think, at least one containing a stronger antiinflamatory. They work for me, and avoid the risk of stomach damage. Maybe worth a try if you can get such things in the USA?

That's a good thought. I'll check.

Ugh. I sympathize! I had loose ligament trouble while nursing as well. In one episode I hyper-extended my knee, thankfully just by a small amount. In another series, my hips kept feeling like they were always going to give out on me. Anyway, take it easy and the good news is this all will get better when you are done.

Thanks. I do hope it gets better, though I note that if we do go for kid #2 in a year or two, that time is yet a ways off. I am *hoping* to get back in decent shape in between, but foot injuries make that really hard, and I've clearly gained weight, esp. around my middle, since the first sprain. Frustrating.

On a completely different topic, Rosie and I will be in Ann Arbor the second half of June. Want to get together for lunch or something? or might you bring the family into town for the summer fest some evening?

Ouch! Sorry to hear. Hang in there and hope you get well soon.

If it's any consolation, i'm in pain somewhat regularly and am not spraining or breastfeeding; i'm just getting old and not exercising enough. :/

Yes, well, it's hard to find the time, isn't it?

I had a bunch of stuff I meant to do on the computer tonight after I put the baby to bed, but she went down late and then I took the time to do not only my sprained ankle exercises but also most of my right shoulder exercises for my old rotator cuff injury. I did those with the lightest resistance band I have, and still my shoulder got sore quickly. It's a righteous kind of sore, but it illustrates how long it's been since the last time I did the exercises that I *should* be doing at least once a week.

On the plus side, Rosie has developed an avid interest in the guitar, so I am picking it up for at least a few minutes almost every day. Now if only she wouldn't change the tuning...
