happy new guitar string day...

On Saturday Bill's friend Chris came to town and we celebrated Bill's birthday. On Sunday we shopped around downtown and Chris went with me to Herb David's Guitar studio so we could celebrate new guitar string day!

--We have an old guitar that used to belong to Bill's dad. The strings we got are nylon and were stretching all day so I had to tune them every time I picked up the guitar, but that's easy since we also picked out a little guitar tuner that shows me what note I'm on and how sharp or flat it is.

I got to a very awkward rendition of Kumbaya by the end of the day. Hurray for Guitar Playing for Dummies. I had actually gotten that far two years ago when I was studying on an electric, but since then it had been a really long time since I'd worked on it. I was just commenting on that to Bill a week or so ago, so this is good timing for me.

Nylon strings are nice (easy on the fingers, usually put on a wide-necked, "classical" guitars), but don't let them spoil you. I still have trouble playing steel strings and electrics because I learned on one.

why? because the fingering is tighter with the narrow neck, or because of the required pressure?

Narrower neck, harder strings, tighter... still, it's nice NOT to have to retune your instrument 20 times when you replace the strings. Still, I'm in no position to buy a new one anytime soon, so i suppose I'm going to get spoiled to a classical again. :-)
