The state of the me

Cuticles: shot to hell (side effect of changing diapers, washing hands a lot, and generally handling the kiddo and receiving blankets)

Nipples: a little sore, but better than yesterday. This kid loves to comfort suck. I try to keep her productive (swallowing), but she only follows orders some of the time. ;)

Hydration: decent (I think I drank 6 or 7 litres of water yesterday, but the key for me is eating enough, especially protein, and getting my electrolyte water)

Amount of sleep: significantly more since Brian got home at 6 than in the rest of the day. Still working on sleeping when the baby sleeps.

Episodes watched of Avatar: The Last Airbender: 25 (appreciating the Netflix instant watch feature)

Number of open wounds: 1 -- my C-section wound opened about 1 cm in an area left of center in my incision last Friday to let out some drainage that wasn't being absorbed due to a low-level infection (I'm on antibiotics). This is a good thing, in terms of overall healing process progressing, but it's annoying and disruptive, because there's this tunnel of space inside that we're packing with gauze tape to absorb the discharge from the wound, plus gauze pads on the outside, and we're changing that dressing twice a day (with help and training from the U of M visiting nurses program). Brian's being stupendous about doing this. Thankfully they gave me this neat tube of burn netting to wear over the gauze pads to hold them on instead of having to change a taped-on dressing 2X a day (ouch! that would suck!).

How I smell: like Fenugreek (vaguely like maple syrup). This is weird, but it seems to be helping boost my milk supply so that's good.

Gratitude for people who've brought over food or helped around the house: Huge!

We are discovering we are needing different types of support now that Brian's going back to work half days and trying to get back into thesis writing. And every day the baby's schedule and needs change... :)

Next week, for the first time in nearly 7 years, I'll actually have 3 hours a day (mornings) kid-free every day. I'd be happy to run errands, drop stuff, buy stuff, or otherwise lend aid any one of them. If no one in my house has a cold (right now we have one, plus signs of another), I'd be happy to come and rock the baby for an hour or two while you nap, even. But only if we're totally healthy. Let me know!

That's such an awesome offer, Sue. Thanks!

What exactly is your free period?

This week she's seemed to be in a growth spurt and eating more often/ harder to put down to sleep (though her focal length has also gotten far enough the stuff above the swing has started to be interesting, which helps a little), so the 'take her for an hour or two while you sleep' offer sounds really good. Please let me know when the family health situation seems to allow that.

I'll keep you in mind regarding picking things up for us. I might ask you to get us some things at thursday's farmer's market...

I'm learning that steamed veggies are a really nice thing to have in the fridge to combine with other foods for snacks and meals...

I drop Jessie off at 9:00 downtown and have to be back at 11:55. I could do Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday morning this week. Jessie's cold is better and no one else has symptoms, so I think health-wise we're clear.

Hmmm. Actually, let me check something. How much does Rosie weigh? And does she tend to need walking around or is sitting in a rocker sufficient? I have some lifting limits from surgery 6 weeks ago, though I expect them to be lifted at my follow-up appointment on Friday.

Also, if we do this, to be very clear... you are not to clean up because I am coming over. You are not to worry about what you are wearing. Besides telling me what I need to know about Rosie, you truly don't even have to talk or be social (unless that's what *you* need). This is your chance to have quiet time or get sleep or pee without worrying that she's going to cry from down the hall.

Rosie is probably still under 8 lbs. I have not walked around with her much for soothing - she seems quite happy to be cuddled in a chair or rocked in the glider or even just jiggled a bit on an arm, though she does sometimes demand something to suck - we have a couple pacifiers but her fave is a pinky finger.

I have lots of pillows to make holding her in the chair easy.

Wednesday morning would be great. My mom just invited us over to dinner tuesday, so I expect we may be disrupted and a bit overtired come wednesday though I'll try to make sure we get our after dinner napping in.

Great! Six weeks ago they told me "not more than a gallon of milk," which is 8 lbs, so we're fine.

Wednesday morning it is. Shall I come over right after I drop Jessie off (probably 9:15/9:20ish)? But I don't even know -- where do you live? If you don't want to post it here, shoot me an email at sue_iekel at hotmail.
