Commentary on Campbell nominees?

Andrea pointed out this morning there do not seem to be many comments or recommendations posted in obvious places with regard to this year's slate of John W. Campbell Award nominees.

They are:

Saladin Ahmed

Gail Carriger

Felix Gilman *

Seanan McGuire

Lezli Robyn *

* second year of eligibility

So, have you read any of their books or stories? Surely the masses have some opinions? Yes? No?

Seanan McGuire is awesome. The Toby Daye books are good, fun urban fantasy, but to see her at her best read FEED (written as Mira Grant).

I'm pushing for Seanan, but I'm biased - she's a sweetie-of-a-sweetie. ;)

Seanan likes Diet Dr. Pepper. A lot. So she has my vote.

That and I don't think I've read anything by the other 4. So really I'll abstain if I find out I do actually get a vote somehow.

I've read stuff by Gail and Seanan, and they both rock. I'd be hard pressed to recommend one over the other because what they're writing is so different. Seanan does that wonderful grungy urban fantasy, and Gail does a much more readable combination of Jane Austen and "Wild Wild West," with a dash of Sherlock Holmes thrown in and set in Queen Victoria's Great Britain (more readable than Jane Austen, not more readable than Seanan).

I've read Seanan McGruire. I enjoyed her first novel. I only read about half of the second one. I figured out the plot less than halfway through and wasn't engaged enough in the "getting to the end" to want to read through the rest, so I skipped to somewhere near the end to read some of the exciting resolution bits. I'll check out her third one in the series because I'm interested to see where some of the relationships go.

I've also read Souless by Gail Carriger and enjoyed it quite a bit. I have avoided vampire fiction over the years. I'm just not into the popular fiction that glorifies and eroticizes vampires. Souless doesn't do that. Victorian mystery, steampunk, plus a dash of Jane Austen and ___ (another author that I'm totally blocking on) -- well, I had to check it out.
