And yes: I think they changed the rules -- including possibly reversing the rank direction, so that there were lots of ones? Am I remembering that right. Something was weird anyway...

Yeah, I saw on wikipedia that some recent editions have reversed the numbering but this is the 40th anniversary edition and is more or less how I remember it, only it's in a smaller wooden box that is the wrong shape to use to cover the board so you can take a break mid-game...

Would be happy to play sometime, if you want. :)
