My router has fallen and can't get up

Dear Internets: I have a dinosaur of a Dlink Wireless Router and lately it has stopped talking to my computer. I even plugged them together and my computer kept cycling through an attempt to connect and then reporting that the network connection did not exist.

This makes me sad.

I am paying for DSL but not using it right now since the router does not work and I'd rather not string ethernet around my office.

This also makes me sad.

I am thinking it is time for a new router. What do I need to know in order to purchase one? I have no idea.

Recommendations?

ETA: Andrh1a says she might have one she can send me! *bounce* I hope so.

I've had several wireless routers. The one I'm currently using, the one I'd recommend, is the Linksys wireless router (Linksys WRT54G/GS/GL). I've reflashed it to use "Tomato," an open source replacement for the standard firmware, and I'm quite happy with it.

I'd select my router by looking at the OS firmware and then finding a router that the firmware supports.

By way of comparison, my previous router required regular reboots; this new router hasn't required a single one.

Indeed, my trusty Linksys WRT54G is just what I'm sending you, Anne. Have the router, have the power adapter, have a box to put it in! I'll try to get to the post office today, but if I do not, please do not give me negative ---- slow shipper will not buy again feedback plskthx.
