speaking of recommendations

I'll be in Columbus tomorrow judging a science fair at Ohio State University. Should finish up around noon and will be looking to grab lunch - recommendations would be greatly appreciated. (I already know about Jeni's ice creams and may check out the Short North district).

I really like the German district - several good eateries there. Plus the ginormous bookstore of a thousand rooms.

Down in German Village, there is Katzinger's, Columbus's answer to Zingerman's. Pickle barrels in the dining room and everything. And around the corner from Katzinger's is The Book Loft, which is highly recommended.

And I'm still upset that Elaine didn't pick up a par-baked from Katzinger's when she was in Columbus last weekend.

I like the Blue Nile Ethiopian Restaurant for something different. It's not far from compus.

But of course don't forget the Ohioana Book Festival tomorrow at the Library of Ohio. :)

right! the book festival! Might catch that if I have time after lunch & before my show... just decided to catch the 2 pm matinee of The Color Purple, the musical.

It's in between campus and downtown, so I just might!

We really love the Blue Nile. Megen and Devon are headed ther tonight!

[identity profile] kenllama.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool!

I will also be in C'bus tomorrow -- late afternoon/evening for some miscellaneous galavanting. If you're still around, care to join me? It's my friends Squish's weekend-long birthday party. (Did you meet her at Co? I think maybe not.)

Also: in the mood for a Columbus excursion this evening? I think I'm going to see Rachael Sage in concert. You could imagine her music as what you'd get if you crossed Ani DiFranco with lipstick lesbian lounge singer...

*joys*

I could be up for joining. I'm going to catch the 2 pm showing of The Color Purple the musical, and then I was thinking about checking out Katzinger's Deli and the Book Loft...

Why don't i give you a call after the show?

(No excursions for tonight, thanks. I have to report for judging at 8 am, so it's early to bed tonight)

ps if you can email me a likely address in advance, I always appreciate the chance to orient on a map before coming

The Vietnamese place a few stalls down from Jeni's location in North market has great sandwiches and spring rolls, and the deli across from it occasionally has some amazingly good prepared food courtesy of their Polish chef.

I haven't decided which Jeni's I'm going to go to Yet, but if I end up at North Market I'll keep that in mind, thanks!

There's a bar called Betty's in Short North that I'm rather fond of. Their meatloaf is phenomenal. http://www.bettyscolumbus.com/

If you get to the North district, then definitely check out Zencha Tea Salon zen-cha.com . They do small meals in addition to wonderful teas and desserts.

Downtown, check out El Arepazo Latin Grill

I agree with Tammy that the meatloaf at Betty's is tasty, but the restaurant can get very crowded from the conference center traffic that is only a few blocks away so don't go at peak times.

Oh, and the Vietnamese place in the North Market has tasty Vietnamese/French sandwiches (bahn mi). And the bakery there has some tasty things you won't see at Zingerman's. And there's a Jeni's in the market as well. You can satisfy a wide range of food-loves just in that one place.

El Aperazo is not far from the theater where I'm taking in a matinee, so I might check it out, thanks!

Off topic: did you get your DW invite? If you don't need it after all, let me know so I can re-direct it.

I'm really only seconding other comments, but I think North Market is a fantastic place to wander around and find something to eat.

I also heartily second Tammy's suggestion of Betty's, which is fantastic.

now I have too many good recommendations! I have been hankering for Indian. Hmm. I might have to make visiting Columbus a fairly frequent thing.
