Woot!

Iowa Supreme Court Rules Unanimously that Same-sex Marriage Ban is Unconstitutional!

(tip o' the hat to [livejournal.com profile] shsilver for the news)

That is grand. I feel like skipping around the office to let everyone know. :)

WOOT!

But that makes me more embarrassed than ever for the state of my birth (Ohio) and my home state (Michigan), both of which changed their constitutions to ban same-sex marriages.

I made my post before I saw yours. :-) I may not live there anymore, but Iowa was my home for the first 22 years of my life. Go Iowa!

So that there is a buzz in the air when the Right places the ballot initiative for the 2010 cycle to amend the Iowa Constitution so that a gay marriage ban is not "unconstitutional" but, in fact, constitutionally required. The ballot initiative brings out the culture warriors...
We shall see. I support equal rights for all; I doubt the good sense and ethical backbone of the American people to see that equal rights are provided and then protected.

Even the conservatives admit (http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnw/20090403/pl_usnw/eagle_forum__iowa_s_supremacist_judges_overturn_state_law_and_ok_gay_marriage) an effort at a ballot initiative in Iowa "would face additional hurdles, such as approval by the state legislature in two consecutive legislative sessions, with a subsequent ballot initiative which receives a popular vote."

That's no gaurantee, but they shouldn't be able to ram it through quite the way it happened in California and Michigan.

It's pretty amazing to see a Supreme Court agree on something unanimously. I hope this doesn't get amended away (though it could still be found in violation of the US constitution then).

Hey, sorry to post Off-topic, but I wanted to alert you to these cool body worries cartoons for teens. Thought it'd be good for Talk Hard.

Not only that, it's a strongly written opinion that directly takes on a lot of the usual counter-arguments to allowing same-sex marriage:

Brilliant. A job well done.
