But that makes me more embarrassed than ever for the state of my birth (Ohio) and my home state (Michigan), both of which changed their constitutions to ban same-sex marriages.
So that there is a buzz in the air when the Right places the ballot initiative for the 2010 cycle to amend the Iowa Constitution so that a gay marriage ban is not "unconstitutional" but, in fact, constitutionally required. The ballot initiative brings out the culture warriors... We shall see. I support equal rights for all; I doubt the good sense and ethical backbone of the American people to see that equal rights are provided and then protected.
Even the conservatives admit (http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnw/20090403/pl_usnw/eagle_forum__iowa_s_supremacist_judges_overturn_state_law_and_ok_gay_marriage) an effort at a ballot initiative in Iowa "would face additional hurdles, such as approval by the state legislature in two consecutive legislative sessions, with a subsequent ballot initiative which receives a popular vote."
That's no gaurantee, but they shouldn't be able to ram it through quite the way it happened in California and Michigan.
It's pretty amazing to see a Supreme Court agree on something unanimously. I hope this doesn't get amended away (though it could still be found in violation of the US constitution then).
