ooo, and the second fun thing of the week? Powerpoint being set by default to adjust text to fit the text box... So I go to set the font of some text to size 28, and it momentarily sets and then changes to something smaller. Like "Ha ha, you thought you could just DO that, huh? No, I'm afraid I don't agree with your formatting decision. Just gonna... fix that for you. There. Isn't that better?"


I found it in the settings and turned it off, but it was definitely a stabbity stabbity moment.


And I won't even go into how Office 2007 can supposedly save presentations to be 2003 compatible but for certain settings that appears to involve making lines of text into images that will not be editable by someone with the older software...

I don't like the new office, 'cuse there's no way I've found as yet, to make it look like the old office. I have no budget or time for IT training for my chiefs (the primary users of Office at my department) and the new UI is so radically different from the old that they (neo-Luddites that they are) are completely lost. The tech savvy can figure it out, the no-so-tech savvy just get frustrated.

New things are neat and wiz-bang, but they don't always serve the user best.

My loathing for Office 2007 is so deep that it forced me to start learning Open Office. Which, imho, has a much shallower learning curve. I haven't tried their presentation tool yet, but I did the ConFusion newsletter with the writer, and am about to dive into the database program.

The MS Office interface has been essentially the same since its DOS incarnation (to the best of my recollection - I'm getting old, and my mamory is failing), and it WORKED. So, of course, they had to change it. Not only that, but they changed the bloody shortcuts, so really and truly, NOTHING works like you expect.

Hates it, we does, my Precious. See what you think of Open Office...

We tried using Open Office at EDA for proposals and such and the result was a major fail, mainly for its inability to handle equations and certain formats of figures and images. After one round of proposal-writing and formatting in open office, especially given that we were collaborating with others using MS word (and even if they saved files as .rtf, OO would mangle them), we had to abandon that prospect. I might try it again sometime soon. If I had the time, I once had dreams of helping the OO project with its functional definition and interface design. that free time thing. I've heard it exists...

(Wednesday I had dinner with some guys from work, and I don't remember what-all we'd discussed up to that point, but a certain format of joke came up and I was all like, "when I was in Ann Arbor I was in a sketch comedy troup, and we had a sketch around that," and the imdiate response was, "so do you ever, like, just hang out and sit on the couch, watch TV or something?" I felt a little awkward, admiting I don't, much.)
