According to the NRDC, "the Bush Administration has stripped wolves in Idaho and Montana of their Endangered Species protection" again. (they did it last spring and got stopped by a federal court). I'm sick and tired of the interests of ranchers being put above the survival of this endangered community of animals who've already had their territory horribly reduced and broken up (despite the fact that, according to the Northern Rockies Wolf Collaborative wolves kill fewer ranch livestock than dogs do each year). You can help by supporting the NRDC, which along with other groups is protesting in court. Again.

Of course, hopefully they only have to keep the legal battle going long enough for Obama to take the reins but the new administration has a lot to do and we can't expect them to be an instant cure-all for Bushocities (atrocities that come from Bush).

Coyotes kill a lot more livestock and pets than wolves do. Wolves are just more visible and easier targets. I know people whose pets have been killed and maimed by coyotes. We should marshal the trigger happy against them instead of the wolves.

I haven't heard of any cases of toddlers being threatened or attacked by wolves in Michigan, have you?

Define threatened. They solve the problem by not letting small children play outside without armed supervision. They walk small dogs, rather than just letting them out in the yard. Cats are on their own. Can one say that there aren't any incidents, when there are no opportunities for incidents?

um, well, yes, if one could truly say there has been no opportunity for something to happen, then logic would suggest that the thing in question had never happened.

But I wasn't asking that. I was asking you to say whether or not you had heard any reports of such. I don't know if wolves can recognize and armed guard so I would suspect if there was truly a danger someone would have reported a standoff, warning shots fired, or wolves taken down specifically to protect children in the sort of situation you describe. That doesn't mean you would have necessarily heard about it, so if you haven't heard any such reports, that doesn't mean they don't exist. I was just wondering, since you talk as though familiar with the subject, if you have heard any or not.

PS Given that there are only now about 500 wolves in Michigan, all in the Upper Peninsula where there are fewer than 300,000 people, there isn't much chance for human-wolf interaction.
