Good going, gmail.
For the last couple years, when I email someone in a conversation, they have been automatically added to my contacts list. Sometimes even with their name, not just email address (I have no idea why half the time it only grabs their address, even when a name is provided by their email system). Whenever someone has been automatically added to the contacts list it then takes away the "add to contacts" option from the drop-down menu that I can access while reading that person's email.
This week I went to email a friend whom I've emailed many times and chatted with in google chat. Definitely a contact. As I typed "Kim" in to the window I waited for her email to come up in the list of contacts. It didn't. I eventually went and looked at my contacts. Instead of over 2000 contacts, I now have 135 contacts and 1,989 "suggested contacts". But if I look at email from one of those suggested contacts, "add to contacts" is still unavailable from the drop-down menu in the interface. And if I go to the contacts screen and choose to add a new contact and put in their information, it complains at me that I can't have more than one contact with the same email.
I have to either search for my contact in the Contacts window and manually move them to contacts, or pull up the "suggested contacts" list, select the person, and click "move to contacts". When I do that and click that button, it changes from showing me the suggested contacts list, which I was working in, to showing my wonderful short contacts list. So I have to click again to get back to the list of "suggested contacts", many of whom have been functionally in my contacts list for ages.
That is SO annoying.

If you are looking at multiple listings for the same name and want to know which one is related to what email address, mouseover the name (but don't click on it) and wait a sec, and the email address will be displayed.
I could swear, though, that some of the people in my "suggested contacts" list are contacts that at some point I deliberately added to my contacts list. It's kind of freakishly demented. I do not, however, want to select all and move them to my contacts. Not really. Anyone I've emailed at least once in recent months is on that suggested list. In the meantime, people I emailed longer ago aren't even on that. I searched for my cousin Jane and she didn't come up in a contacts search at all. I searched email for her messages and re-added her.

Now when I click on gmail, instead of launching gmail in a new tab, it launches an igoogle version of gmail which takes over the entire igoogle page only does not pull up chat or any of the options I am used to. If I want gmail, I have to do that first, then launch gmail in a new tab and then, when I'm done with gmail, I have to go back to igoogle and re-set it to my regular home page.
It just sucks sucks sucks. I could complain more, like how it now takes two clicks instead of one to view or collapse a window, the tab on the side versus the top takes up a ridiculous amount of room on the screen making everything smaller and less usable -- but why enumerate? It's just pure hatred. With no option to go back to the old version. Argh.

They did this in support of the new G1 thingy because basically downloading all your contacts into the phone would make it horribly unwieldy. What I did was set up a group called 'Sync', and that's the only group the phone syncs. Unfortunately, right now, it doesn't sync any group information for groups you don't sync. *sigh* So in order for my phone to know about a group, I have to sync everybody in the group.
Anyway, yeah, they ruined your experience in order to try to make sure the experiences of 10s (or perhaps 100s) of thousands of new mobile phone users was only sort of not good instead of absolutely horrible.
