Ah, travel, how you go to my head

This morning I woke up at 5 a.m., local time, and shuffled off to the bathroom. As I went in the door I reached for the light switch and was utterly stymied. It wasn't where it ought to be! Only after a short while did I realize I was reaching for the bathroom light switch of the last hotel I stayed at, the Doubletree in Houston, where I remember noting the light switch was unusually far away from the doorway.

Here at the Holiday Inn in Lawrence, the light switch is just inside the door (like most places, at least those where it is not outside the door), and once I figured that out I turned it on, at the same moment deciding I was clearly not ready to wake up yet, so after the requisite bodily functions I took myself back to bed to await my alarm's going off an hour later.

It has been a delightful conference, and I will write more later about the campbell and SFRA awards last night. Now I am heading back to Ann Arbor. Wish me luck on that whole traveling thing.

I once had to go to a half-dozen cities in a couple of weeks' time for work. I was staying in the same hotel chain for most of the trips, and at one point realized I had no memory of what city I was in, and had to look at the phone book to find out, so I knew what directions and equipment to take with me that day.

When we were staying in Massachusetts, we discovered that the northeastern part of the country puts their light switches on the outside of bathrooms. It was very peculiar.

I remember when I was younger, some hotels did that...I think it was to just have one box for all the bathroom lights and make things cheaper. Especially since the sink was always outside the toilet-and-shower room.

I so understand that "how is the hotel laid out, this week" syndrome.

I also get a bad case of, "what colour is my car this week?". Those remote entry things that make your car beep and flash its lights are really useful.

Quite useful. Friday night I offered to drive four of us to dinner in my rental car and followed the vector I knew lead to my car and used the clicky thing to distinguish between another silver SUV and my trailblazer (why Hertz calls a trailblazer a compact car, I do not know).

Either that, or they "upgraded" you for "free" when they didn't have a compact left.
