Lessons of SF Interfaces - coming to Austin in March

If you're in the Austin area in March, you might like to check out the SXSW Conference on Music, Film, and Interactive Media, March 7-16, 2008.

In the Cooper design newsletter, they noted that, among other events, Cooper designer Chris Noessel will deliver his presentation about SciFi interfaces and their influence on the creation of real-world products, "Make It So: What Interaction Designers Can Learn From Science Fiction Interfaces".

Hopefully, they aren't trying to learn from the e-mail interfaces shown in Mission: Impossible and Contact. I remember looking at those and saying that if that sort of thing showed up in the movies often enough, real products would start imitating it...

*yoinks idea for Polaris*

The thing that always drives me crazy about computer interfaces in media SF is that nothing is labelled. What, is everyone supposed to have the layout of their console memorized?

We have mouseover text, presumably they have fingerover instructions.

I found that the SXSW Interactive portion is no longer worth the price. I'll hit the tradeshow for free and talk to a few people I know will be there. And I know people that actually work for SXSW and have told them my reasons in the past.
