Doom! Yay!
(paraphrasing skennedy)
So in case you haven't noticed, Susan Orr has been appointed as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs (DASPA). She will oversee Title X, the nation's family planning program, and is openly anti-contraception, anti-choice, and a firm believer in abstinence-only sex education.
Yay!
Among other things, Orr objected to a Washington, D.C., city council bill requiring health insurers to pay for contraceptives. By not including a “conscience clause” allowing employers to withhold contraceptive coverage, Orr said the council would force employers "to make a choice between serving God and serving the D.C. government."
Yay!
I'd like to agree with Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., who released a statement saying, “This appointment is absurd.” But it isn't just absurd, it's an attack on the health, education, and general welfare of the men and women (and boys and girls) in this country.
The Planned Parenthood Street Team is meeting this Thursday (11/08) at 6:30pm in Espresso

That's a pretty big bucket to have your hands in, time to get oriented or no.
Now, "By law, Title X funds may not be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning." So Planned Parenthood programs already don't receive this money. But the money goes to training programs, which of course means control over training policies, etc, etc.
I do honestly believe that a year going in the wrong direction in these areas is an expensive year for the American people, not just in throwing money away but as opportunity cost and real costs in miss-training people, and in terms of unwanted pregnancies and children and unnecessary abortions. (note that a week prior to the appointment yet another study confirmed that in countries without an emphasis on abstinence-only sex ed the abortion rate is lower. Better sex ed means fewer abortions, consistently, in any population)
