I don't know. They said in the article they played the shell game with him and he would get visibly upset when his prize wasn't there as expected, so he understood what a gyp life could be, with people experimenting on you all the time.

They were teaching him colors, numbers, and such. I doubt they'd gotten to The Meaning of Life (or even The Circle of Life) from there. But maybe.
