Perspectives on Finding Love
1. From Alice Hoffman, in Local Girls:

3. Hoffman again:
(I know I do)
Jill told me that when you're really in love, you know right away. I'm not exactly sure how this happens. Is it like a flash of lightning? Like an angel tapping you on the shoulder? Or is it similar to choosing a puppy? You think you're picking the cutest one, but really you wind up going home with the one who keeps insisting on climbing into your lap. That's how we got our dog, Revolver. We thought he was so crazy about us, but it turned out that Labrador retrievers adore everyone. Well, maybe that's what love is, a state of mind ready to grace anyone willing to accept it. Anyone who cares.

3. Hoffman again:
Just like Jill, she insists that she'll know when she meets the right man. But unlike Jill, she tells me exactly what love's evidence is. I'll just want to kiss him till I die. To me, this doesn't sound like something to hope for, but people seem to hope for it all the same.
(I know I do)

So what you need, really, is a partner you have sufficient lust for, than you respect and fall in love with, that you can work out a long-term relationship with. And then, it's still a day-to-day-to-week proposition, because some weeks are a lot harder than others.

but love is like Nirvana. It's not so much about where you're at as where you're headed.

I've had that instantaneous love, and I've had had that super-intense-omgeee love, and I've had that gradually developing love (which I thought didn't exist for the longest time).
At the moment, I'm hard-pressed to analyze any of it objectively.

There are people whose company we enjoy.
There are people who are physically attracted to us, and who enjoy our company.
Ultimately, though, you love those whom you serve. You love best those whom you serve most.
This won't help you find someone to love, but it might just help you keep them.

I really don't know what to make of that. I mean, I hope that's not a bad thing...
