Race for the Rocket

My review of this year's novel-length Hugo nominees is online now in the Summer edition of Subterranean Magazine, along with loads of fabulous material by Elizabeth Bear and a few other authors and a panel discussion from Penguicon on the life and work of influential sf author Godfrey Winton, a topic I recall merited much serious and considered discussion at the Subterranean breakfast before the panel.

Thank God! Someone else who didn't like Blindsight!!!!

I'm not sure if I will do a mega-review this year. Just not sufficiently enthused by the candidates.

:)

I accidentally called it Blindspot a couple weeks ago in an email to Bill Schafer, a name that seemed more appropriate... It really was a struggle to make myself finish it.

Eifelheim was my favorite, especially for the charming way the character Tom keeps using random languages to express his short commentary and endearments. The shift into first person at the end was a bit awkward/surprising, but for me that was the only ruffle in an otherwise superb book.

Nice reviews, but I really like Joe Lansdale's column; I'll see him in about a month at ArmadilloCon.
