mango lovers beware!

Deanna Hoak posts about The hidden dangers of Mangoes - mainly that the peel contains a poison like to the poison in poison sumac or poison ivy (don't scrape into it with your teeth for that last morsel of fruit!).

In case you're wondering, I am not allergic to any of those plants (so far) and would be happy to peel your mango for you.

Damned sneaky fruit. Just can't trust it.

You're only offering to peel? I don't *think* that's exactly what Deanna recommended... ;)

The roomie is from Africa, right? So, she says, go ahead and eat the peel like an apple, as long as you wash it, it's fine. She tells this story of picking mangoes off the tree and because of the toxic sap, you have to whip it upside down and let the milk drain out of the stem before it touches your skin. Go ahead, she says, eat it like an apple!

Broke out all over my face and haven't had a mango in 6 months because I was afraid I had an allergy.

wow, that sucks. Well now you know, you can probably eat the fruit as long as you avoid the peel...

That sounds nice. :)

And thank you for the mango tips. It's good to avoid poison sumac type reactions.

I'm very allergic to poison ivy but have never broken out or reacted badly to mango, even after peeling it by hand. Lucky, I guess.

I get the impression the main risk is from eating or chewing on the peel.
