Had a good meeting with Tammy yesterday and also spent most of the day working on ConFusion stuff, both for this year and next year. I am pleased to be able to report that Bruce Sterling has agreed to be our author guest of honor in 2004, and it looks like we will have invited our other three guests by sometime this week, hopefully. Don't know if they'll respond so quickly, of course, but we can hope.

Bill picked me up, happy with his juggling club experience, and we went home. After calling Jeff, we watched the second half of the Godfather (part 1). I have never watched the godfather movies before. As we watched this one, Bill occassionally pointed out places where the movie could have been shortenned. I agree, but I also found myself getting accustomed to the pacing and the feel of it. I'm glad I've seen it now, and looking forward to seeing the others.

I think the pacing has to do with the time period during which the movie was made. Since Godfather was the first movie of its kind, it doesn't assume that you understand the dynamics of mafia movies or subject matter. so the sopranos and all teh mafia movies to come after godfather rely on this and thus I think they can skim over some of the background ambience. People in our generation who grew up with this take the ambience and formulas of the genre for granted, and don't require as much depth as to understand it. so godfather might seem slowly paced for that reason.

I really liked it, though, I was surprised at how engaging it was, and considering that we have bbeen spoiled with decades of knock-offs, it's kind of a testament to its craft that it can still entertain.

Just to warn you, I was sorely disappointed with Godfather II. I really thought it stank. ll the slowness, with none of the power and originality. I've heard # 3 is better, but I haven't seen it yet.
