Soccer! - anyone up for a game on Friday (10 pm)?

Last week the Red Devils had a pretty strong game, but were suffering from a lack of subs. This week we're anticipating even more of a problem, as key members are out of town or recovering from surgery.

This is indoor soccer on the wonderful turf at WideWorldSports on the south side of Ann Arbor. All are welcome. Anyone female who's interested in playing will be a big hero, 'cause it's a coed league so we have to have two women on the field at all times, and one of our female players is definitely not going to be there. Wear a red t-shirt and show up at 9:45 and we will worship you! Even better, leave a comment or email me at netmouse (at) netmouse.com and we can get together for dinner and a warm-up and stretch beforehand, if you're interested (my house is conveniently only 5 minutes from the sports place).

How athletic/fit are the players? I have some fond-ish soccer memories, but it's been YEARS since I did any kind of thing like that.

We have a wide variety - and all of us seem terrifically out of shape compared to the team captain's 17-year-old daughter, who is a long-distance runner and can go the whole game and then do some sprints to cool down (I've seen her do it!). Just don't compare yourself to her and I'm sure you'll fit in fine. ;)

Seriously, most of the team seems to be about our age. Manya, who won't be there, is probably similarly fit to you. Half the team is a little asthmatic, so we try to sub people out every three minutes or so, depending on how we're doing. We do have a couple people who are faster and really good with the ball, which props up the rest of us. It's also a smaller field than an outdoor field, so there isn't as much running as you may remember. We have a lot of fun and I've been told our team was the worst team in the league last season and this season last I heard we were something like 3 up from there, so we're psyched!

(Half the team is also made up of doctors, which is really handy if you get hurt and also reinforces a general team attitude that people should not push themselves too hard and should get a sub if they're looking run down.)

Hmmm... I'll have to see how tired I am tomorrow. Maybe I'll try to come out. It sounds like it could be fun.
