SF, here I am

Here I am in San Francisco. No travel dificulties. opted to take the BARt instead of a cab or something and then enjoyed the nice walk up through Union Square to the Hotel Adagio. I think this is one of the most nicely appointed rooms I've ever been in. Not overly fancy, just... neat. I'll post pictures when I get back. Augmented Cognition conference starts today with a banquet at 6, then Human Factors starts Tuesday. I'm here until Sunday, staying over to get a full day to visit with Tim and Meryl.

On the flight over, I watched a perfect circle of a rainbow follow under the plane on the clouds for a while. I figure something about the plane, whether exaust or something else for the sunlight to defract through, must have caused it. Anyway, it was pretty, yellow in the center, then orange, then pinky red. Going over the Western center of the country was interesting. I never knew so many people made their fields round. Fields are all patchwork rectangly things in Michigan. At first I thought they were something other than fields, but there were tons of them and I am pretty sure they were fields. Some had half one thing, half another. I enjoyed watching the patterns of colors, dusty browns and reds especially.

I took the BART into town from the airport. Not many people were doing that. It was kind of weird going through these huge industrial walkways to get to the AIR train by myself. It's warmer than I expected. My wool suite jacket is sufficient, no need for the coat.

Now I'm off to get some fresh fruit before the Banquet. I miss you all!

I think the round fields are for irrigation -- or from irrigation. Given a central pipe, it is easier to just run your irrigation machinery in a circle around it, giving circular fields. Sure, you waste the corners -- but with land being cheap (there's lots of land) compared to irrigation hardware and time, why not?

Also, I'm still in Mountain View, Ca, and was wondering if you'd like to get together for dinner an evening this week. Hm... Google claims it's about 45 minutes drive from here to there... but I bet Google doesn't take into account traffic. Might not be so doable. I'll have to ask around, about the time it would take -- I'm sure someone at work would know. (If you're interested, of course.)

I'm interested, but I have no car, so it's pretty much only a go if you're willing to come this way. Wednesday or Thursday could be good - I'm busy monday and Tuesday.

I have car -- I had been figuring I'd be the one driving up that way. (Which is why I wanted to ask the people at work about traffic.)

I want to go climbing again on Wednesday, so I think Thursday would work best for me. I'll let you know after I inquire about the traffic situation. It may mean that a later dinner works better, or even that I do some sort of park & ride type thingy.

Chris Dibona invited me (and a guest) to join him for lunch at 11:30 today. I'm thinking I'll take the train down there - want to join us? I could use a ride from the train station to google and back. pls give me a call on my cell - 734-649-4534 - I don't have your number.

Lunch was good, and I think you have my cell number, too.

I'm told that if I leave here around 5pm on Thursday, and take the correct route (280, not 101) it should take me about an hour to get to San Francisco, and then some additional time on the surface -- though it doesn't look like too far from the highway to your hotel. So, I would defnitely be up for dinner on Thursday in S.F. with you.

ok, cool. do you like Sushi or vietnamese? I got a couple restaurant recommendations from my cousin.

I'm not a fan of Sushi, but I have liked Vietnamese upon occasion.

The round fields are for pivot irrigation systems. They just turn the watering system on a long bar around the central point.

Did you get to see the different colors of salt pools as you were landing? That's my favorite thing about flying in and out of the Bay Area.

aha! well, that's the difference, then. Michigan has more water.

I didn't get to see much on the approach because of the clouds - just white with little mountains sticking out, then solid white, then water with boats and then runway.

It's cool, though, isn't it? I love flying over the plains.. they look like a giant Mondrian print...

See this explanation of the rainbow effect (called a "glory").

That's it exactly. Thanks!

Hotel Adagio, WOW!

Its a bit different from the Hotel Union Square where I first stayed in SF.

Although I know you can't see John's Restuarant from your window.

Also I bet that the guy mopping the restaurant in the hotel isn't singing "Welcome to the Hotel California" while you eat.
