uh... he's this Hungarian drummer from Minneapolis/St. Paul, who also writes elfie/whelfie fantasy novels...
(*removes tongue from cheek*)
Have you not read any Steven Brust? And you a friend of Neil's? You should fix that. Luckily it's generally an enjoyable thing to do. :)
Steven has written a number of standalone novels, and also a series about an assassin and his familiar -- that's often called the Vlad Taltos series, or some subset of such (Steven calls them the Vlad novels). Start with Jhereg. Steven does in fact play the drums (and also the guitar and the banjo) and appears on albums by Cats Laughing, Folk Underground, Flash Girls, (and probably others), and a solo CD. He has also been known to write songs. Boiled in Lead recorded an album of songs from the book Gypsy that Steve co-wrote with Megan Lindholm.
He avowedly does not have a big white kuvasz (dog) named Harkos and a double yellow-headed amazon parrot named Doc.
Steve currently lives in Las Vegas, but right now he's in Minneapolis, writing and playing drums for a bellydancing troupe that performs at the RenFest. I'm in mpls too, and enjoyed that and many other performances over the weekend, mainly by Folk Underground, Bedlam, and the pirate group chirosinger and musicmutt were running around with.
I've been pleased to be friends with him ever since my first Minicon in the early 90s. We had him to ConFusion as our Toastmaster this year and that was a lot of fun.
I don't know if that was a *creative* answer, but maybe it gives you some idea... :)

He *does* have some rather nifty kids, of which at least three are on LJ -
