The recent rise of American militarism

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] novapsyche for a link to this article on The New American Militarism: How Americans Are Seduced by War, by retired Army Col. Andrew Bacevich, and America Right or Wrong: An Anatomy of American Nationalism, by Anatol Lieven.

"Of all the enemies of public liberty," Bacevich quotes former President James Madison as writing in 1795, "war is perhaps the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. … No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare."

It's a bit of a nit, but in 1795 James Madison was a future President, not a former one.

I know. This is what worries me about our continuous "War on Terror" and the accompanying erosion of our rights.
