potentially useful advice

Wandering through the Institute for Social Research, I came across this page of

Tips for Working With The Media
http://www.umich.edu/news/index.html?tips

Bill has just been sending out press releases for the upcoming Ann Arbor Juggling Festival, so this particularly caught me eye. it looks like useful advice for interacting with reporters.

I agree; decent advice.

I've been a reporter, and they all seemed like reasonable tips to me. One thing to clarify about "off the record," though. If you ask the reporter, "Can I tell you something off the record?" and they say yes, MOST reporters WILL honor it. HOwever, if you tell them something, and THEN afterward, say, "Can we keep that off the record?" they really have no obligation to you to keep it off the record. So, as the original tip said, if you don't want it on the evening news, don't say it, even "off the record."
