domain registrations

Is there any way to look up what all domains someone owns? I know through whois you can check specific domains and find out who owns them, but can you go in the opposite direction as well?

And has anything ever been moved or resolved stating that someone has to be doing something with a domain name in order to retain it?

Just frustrated right now with the big registration houses... it's bad enough that there are so many speculative places that have claimed domains and are offering them for sale, but I also just became aware of Future Media Architects, who proudly proclaim that they own thousands of high-quality domain names and have no intention of parting with any of them. Part of the new way they want the internet to be used... and a way to portal people into their search engine, Oxide.

I came across them by typing in www.jade.com

I'd be curious to know what'all domains FMA has control of and it seems like there ought to be a way to look that up...

I did hear years ago that some legislation had passed requiring companies that hold domain names to actually do something with them. So, for example, if someone had grabbed mcdonalds.com, they couldn't just squat it. I'm not sure how to look up the legislation, though.

I *think* this might be a start on what you're looking for, IIUYC:

http://reports.internic.net/cgi/whois?whois_nic=future+media+network+k.k.&type=registrar

Even that's only really a partial result for what you want, though...

Have you tried googling "registrar domains lookup" or other similar phrases?

actually, I think Future Media Network is someone else -- those folks are in Tokyo. FMA is in the Virgin Islands:

Yeah, looks like they are two different groups. Oh, well. Good luck finding a resource -- if you find something useful, please do post it, as I'm sure there are others who are interested in this type of information. :-)

Several years ago when I was still doing ISP stuff, it was possible to retrieve *your* domains from a given registrar. They intentionally didn't give you a way to find someone elses domains. You were sometimes able to work around this by managing to get the .com domain dump (all domains on the Internet) and looking for things with common nameservers. This isn't normally available to end-users, but someone else may make it available now.

If I remember right, back from reading about some previous legal cases, there's nothing that stops anyone from 'camping' on a domain address for as long as they want (or at least until their registration expires) whether they use it or not. The exception to this (at least in the U.S.) is when a name they have registered is identical or substantially similar to a trademark, service mark, or other registered mark of an individual or corporation. In those cases, and where the current owner doesn't have an equally good reason for for wanting that domain, the current owner can be forced by court order to hand over the domain to the protesting entity.

So, someone that had glommed onto McDonalds.com early on could be forced to hand over the domain name to the McDonald's Corporation. However (and I've seen cases along this line) someone named Timothy Horton could not necessarily be forced to hand over his registered site, TimHortons.com, to the Tim Hortons restaurant chain, because he has a valid reason for having it in the first place.

Still, none of this helps you find a list of all registered addresses for a domain owner. I might suggest that you ask the "LiveJournal Genie" for suggestions on that one. It's an open LiveJournal where people can ask questions on any topic, and anyone that reads can answer. The only stipulations for getting help are:

1. You have to begin the posted question with the phrase "Dear LJ Genie", and

2. You have to agree to thank anyone and everyone that posts with valid attempts at assistance.

The LiveJournal address is [livejournal.com profile] ljgenie.
