"My neighbors want it." That's the kick in the gut. The most inconsolable are those who need desperately to believe in the goodness of Americans before they can value "America," the concept, the institutions. They realized that which they fear isn't being imposed on the populace from above by clever maneuvering... it's within. Democracy seems to have no defense against that.
