What would people recommend for Mexican around here?

I kow about the burrito place down on South U (Pancheros) and Sabor Latino. Has anyone tried their taqueria on State street?

Aside from the two great places on Cross street mentioned earlier, there's not much in the way of Mex food places in the area. I'm fond of Prickly Pear downtown on Main, though it's pretty pricey and more a nouvelle-mex than standard fare.

Aut Bar used to have good, relatively authentic mexican food on their menu, but the selection was pretty limited and it's been a while since I tried it. Therea are a few other places around that have good mexican food on their menu, but don't specialize. None spring immediately to mind.

Bandito's on fourth is rather ordinary, but good quality. They call their menu "cal-mex". As I recall, they also have a liquor license, which the good places (La Fiesta, Panchero's, Sabor Latino, Taqueria Jalisco) lack.

A more specialized "place" is Pilar's, which (as far as I know) only sells tamales. But *really* good ones. They may or may not have a proper storefront; as I understand it, they mostly do catering. Sometimes they have a tamal-cart at Liberty Plaza durning the summer.

I was fond of Don Carlos, especially back when they did seafood, but both their locations are closed now.

There's supposed to be a new place down in the Hill/State/Packard triangle, but I didn't get a chance to try it out before I left. The ads claimed it is the best thing since The Burro, which was a long-time favorite of mine.

That's about all I can come up with. I agree that Mexicantown is the way to go if you really want Mexican food.

On a side-note, there's a Brazilian "grocery" in the little shopping center on Main down by the Neutral Zone. As I recall, they have an interesting lunch buffet.

We just went for a walk to return a video and in the plaza on Stadium by Hungry Howie's they are putting in a new taqueria. we're hoping it will be good.

I'm in Atlanta (well, just south of it). Moved down on the 16th of July. I keep forgetting to change my lj user page.

I forgot that there's a newish chain mexican place over on Ann Arbor-Saline in the shopping center by the construction (where Bush's is).

Ah. I knew you'd left, but had missed where. When we drove past there on our road trip, we stopped in Murphy, North Carolina, wihch is a short ways north of Atlanta. We asked them what they would go see if they were going to stop in Atlanta in the morning. They said they wouldn't stop, that they would push to be south of it (we were going on south to jacksonville from there) and skip it entirely. So we did. I hope you find more to recommend.

If you need a break, go North to Murphy and have dinner at Shoebooties cafe. It's a lovely place with great food.
