The Word

We're off to where the rabbit goes in stories never told.

Albuquerque!

Brian has been accepted to the University of New Mexico for a post-doc with a three-year fellowship. Yay!

Anyone who knows our recent moving history will be unsurprised to hear we are both looking forward to being in the same place for at least three years. The program starts Sept 1 and we expect to move out there in late July or early August.

It will be hard to move away from the wonderful support network of friends and family we have been so lucky to have here in Ann Arbor, but we know a couple people in Albuquerque and will be driving distance from other friends and family in Arizona. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of my brother's family for a few years (they live in Vail/Tuscon), and being close to them will also help motivate my parents and my sister to come out for visits, we hope (that is our fiendish plan, anyway).

Brian went out to New Mexico for the first half of this week for interviews and to choose a research mentor. He came back with a lot of positive things to say and clear excitement about the people he's going to work with, which was really nice to hear.

I've been to the Southwest a number of times, but never lived there, so advice about how to make the transition would be welcome.

And, yes, I promise to dress Rosie up as a cowgirl and send back pictures of her in the mountains. And then I'll dress her up as a physicist and do likewise, because that's just how we roll.

Best of luck with the move, and may all three of you enjoy and thrive in your new place.

I know there's enough of a fan base there for Bubonicon (including a couple people I know), so I doubt you'll have any trouble building up a set of local friends once you're there.

(Also, since I didn't say so earlier: it was great to see you and Rosie last weekend.)

Transition

This will sound obvious, but drink lots of water & wear sunscreen.

Also, places out here do not have basements/attics, so get rid of LOTS of stuff before moving, unless you've already done so. We have not missed anything we got rid of.

If you can afford to hire movers to at least pack/unpack your truck, definitely do so, because there's so much else you will personally have to do.

I like Albuquerque - I hope you do too. My brother, sister-in-law and nephew all went to U of NM and I think the campus is lovely.

Good luck! I don't know much about NM, but I am sure you will like it there. Good luck with the move, travelling with the little one can be ... interesting.

Wow, congrats to Brian! And good luck to you both with the move and adjusting to a new home base.

I think you might enjoy going to Sante Fe or Portales for SF events too.

Sounds like a great opportunity. We will be in Albuquerque for Bubonicon in August. Steve is GOH. THis is the weekend after worldcon so maybe we'll get to see you there.

I look forward to the cowgirl and physicist photos, and to your Great American Southwest Adventures.

Many, many congratulations to Brian. It will be weird to have you so far away, but knowing you're there will help make my own world smaller and New Mexico closer.

As for people in the area, George R.R. Martin and Parris McBride are in Santa Fe. That looks to be 60-65 miles away. I think Melinda Snodgrass is, too.

Last I knew, Gordon Garb was still in California, but I think he's still a Bubonicon regular, and you'll like anyone he points you at.

I think Vardebob (Bob Vardeman) is still in Albuquerque. Our paths haven't crossed more than once or maybe twice over the years, but he's been firmly tagged as a genial good guy in my brain since I first heard about him from [livejournal.com profile] fredcritter 25+ years ago.

Oh, congrats on the official word!

Who will I pass my little girl clothes to? You must keep posting pictures so we can watch Rosie grow up!
