Oh Anne, I'm so sorry. :-( I know how you feel; a few years ago, within a two-week period I hit a deer (while driving a friend's car, to boot!) and a squirrel, and almost decided to quit driving, since I was apparently Death on Wheels. Very sad.
I hope your garden is a good and welcoming place to critters of all types.
And I'm glad the party went off without anything growing legs. I was a little curious about that, since you'd previously said you weren't going to have any parties - glad to hear that things went well, and I hope your jacket turns up.
