Smart Car Test Drives at South U Art Fair Wed-Sat Next Week

The smart car will be available for purchase in the US in 2008.
The smart USA roadshow will be at the Ann Arbor South University Art Fair next Wed - Sat. Test drives are available from 10 am - 5:30 pm. Look for them on S. University between Washtenaw and State.

Quite a few friends and colleagues of mine drive these (two couples even have one each, his'n'hers!) a lot of people use them just to commute to work.

I'm 6'5" tall and, astonishingly, can drive one of these comfortably.

I was initially a bit concerned about their stability at high speed, but see plenty of them doing 70-75mph on the motorway with no apparent problems.

With fuel prices here fast approaching $7-50 per US gallon (over $9-00 per imperial gallon), they are very economical to run...

I'll be fascinated to see how they fare in the crash-test ratings. And beyond that, they have a lot of features that would help one *avoid* an accident, if it was the kind one could dodge away from. Both are important, to my mind. A certain amount of the time the truck just leaps over the barrier right ahead of you and there's no time to do anything.

My 6'7" friend in college was a big fan of the VW Rabbit; he said it was one of the very few cars he could both sit in and afford.

The web site mentions parking places, but doesn't mention that you could probably fit 4 or even 6 in most "2-car" garages.

Someone mentioned crash tests, i haven't seen formal ones.

With a frame that rigid i'd imagine the car could be made to handle well and be somewhat fun to drive with some effort :).
