The gunk and the grime, it gathers with time...

Have you ever looked at something you touch on a regular basis and gone "Ew!! Just... Ew!"

I dare you to look at the underside of the handle to your dishwasher.

Maybe you're lucky and someone in your household has thought to clean it in the half decade or however long you've had your house, but I, alas, have no one who has lived with me who would clean such a detail aside from myself, and I only just noticed it. Ew. We are selling the house soon and when we do it will have a much cleaner dishwasher front and handle than it did half an hour ago. As an aside, they should really make dishwasher knobs easily removable for cleaning like they often do for stoves and ovens. The surface of the handle that glides over the body of the dishwasher as it locks and unlocks is likewise almost impossible to get to.

Yep. Top of the fridge at my house. GROSS. I'm just not even close to tall enough to notice it. When I remember after a couple of months, I'm always a tad repulsed.

Hey, what are you up to on Saturday July 7? Amy is having one of those all day shin-digs we were talking about last week. You and, well, whoever, really, are invited. Drop me an email.

Love,

K.

Well, it wasn't something I *TOUCHED* on a regular basis, but in college I worked for a wings shop that was moving RIGHT after I got hired. So I was on the detail that got to clean the fryers in mid-move.

Holy. Cow.

Luckily, they had the foresight to rent some pressure washers and put them in the back parking lot (we were just moving them down the street). The backside of a commercial deep-fat fryer that's been in-place for 20 years or so? Wow. Words can't EVEN describe.

About two months ago, I spent an entire afternoon scrubbing down the keyboard on my main computer at home. It took an effort of will not to use undiluted bleach.

Your thoughts disturb me. I did clean the underside of the dishwasher handle about 5 years ago, I think. I've put it out of my mind since then, thank you so very very much. Arg.

I dare you to lick the underside of your dishwasher handle. Without looking first.

Related, the inside of the fridge handle gets kinda grungy...but not all-out gross, usually.

I never thought much about our dishwasher, but it sounds like kudos are in order to the designer because the handle on ours is just a brass bar with no place for gunk to crawl into and hide.

As much as I love my iMac, the person who designed a white and clear keyboard that doesn't disassemble gracefully needs to be visited by rabid weasels in the dead of night and taken to the houses of those of us who have one and made to clean the doggone things.

now I will be forced to check mine... thank you?

Yep, I just did that too. Keyboard hadn't been cleaned in *seven years*. Yech. Lots of alcohol, q-tips, and scrubbing, but it's clean now!

I miss the old IBM keyboards where you could just pop off all the key caps and dump them in a bucket of white board cleaner overnight. Of course, remembering where there all went afterwards was usually a challenge...

Heh, the keyboard in question for me actually is one of those old IBMs. Still a hassle to clean, but yeah -- being able to pop off the keytops and soak them overnight helped a lot.

They're still being made, btw: http://www.pckeyboard.com/

I don't have a dishwasher, but the underside of the handle to my oven gets pretty gross.
