Crime

Joe Conat's latest editorial is an almost poetic piece on the crime surrounding the New Orleans disaster.

me, I feel torn that though I've donated (Donate Now!, I'm not doing anything physically to help. It's so close and yet so far away. And my life goes on, essentially unaffected in the near future except possibly by a scarcity of gas eventually. But I've been meaning to start biking to work anyway...

Feeling a little disappointed in the country

It's not just the administration... When 9/11 happened, health centers around the country scrambled their emergency burn units and search and rescue teams to the scene. I can only wonder what they're doing now -I have seen no reportage of a similarly big-hearted and speedy response by anyone except a few organizations for whom it is part of their purpose.

And the national gaurd, of course. Those poor young people. First we send half of them to Iraq, then we ask the other half to take up arms against their own people. Bless them, they signed up willingly for this duty.

some nicer news..

Some Texas towns are Planning to let students start attending school despite lack of records this week as the homeless counts in central texas swell with refugees.

And [livejournal.com profile] matt_arnold passed on a lovely excerpt about violinist Samuel Thompson, playing for other refugees as they take shelter together in the New Orleans Arena.

[livejournal.com profile] mgaiman tagged me.

Name six songs that you are currently digging... it doesn't matter what genre they are from, whether they have words or even if they're any good but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. post these instructions and then list the six artists and the songs in your LiveJournal. then tag six other people to see what they're listening to.

Lyle Lovett - She's no Lady
The Proclaimers - Sunshine on Leith
