Remnant Population 'til 2:30 am
So last night Bill went to bed early, anticipating getting up at 5:30 to go run his Blood Drive. I stayed up to take the brownies out of the oven, wait for them to cool, and cut them up to send with for blood donators. Mostly I edited Emerald City while waiting.
At 11:35 I picked up Remnant Population and went to the bathroom on my way to bed. Finished getting ready for bed, I couldn't put the book down, so I sat on the edge of the tub and kept reading (I didn't want to go in the bedroom and wake Bill up). Around 1:30 Bill came wandering out of the bedroom looking for me (I was vaguely startled to find I'd spent so much time in what was not a particularly comfortable position), so I went to bed, where I kept reading until I finished the book.
I probably won't be that coherent today, but I have to say that everyone who nominated that book for the Hugo award and who said we should read it for the Stilyagi Book Discussion Group in September was right: This is an amazing book. It is probably _the_ best hard sf/alien contact book I have read in at least three years. Not the least because it is a poetic exploration of the earthy perceptions of an old woman on a distant planet who escapes from society's expectations for a time and discovers herself in the process. Go get it and read it and then pass it around to all your friends. I think I'll write a better review later for Tanstaafl.
